Description
The National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry's (NACB) 1996 Standard of Laboratory Practice, Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of the Newborn Infant, had as in previous meetings the goal of public review of a series of draft recommendations for physicians, laboratorians, and manufacturers regarding a focused clinical area. The draft recommendations had been through a major review by clinicians and laboratorians before the meeting. These recommendations and background information are presented in the subsequent pages of this issue of Clinical Chemistry. A few themes were repeated in the recommendations of almost all of the meeting's participants, in particular the use of age-specific reference intervals and the use of technology that requires the minimum volume of sample for both the analysis and the sample cup's "dead-volume." Moreover, neonatal intensive-care units should carefully record the amount of blood drawn daily to facilitate its timely replacement and to minimize the incidence of iatrogenic anemia in newborns.
